Neighborhoods

The Connor neighborhood is named after Mary Jean Connor, SL (1889-1918), who was best known for her work during the Spanish Influenza where she, along with 12 other sisters, nursed the ill and spread the gospel to the soldiers at Fort Zachary Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky. Sixteen days after arriving to volunteer as nurse at Fort Taylor, Sister Mary Jean passed from the flu prior to making her final vows. She was given a full military funeral, becoming the first sister given this honor.   

The Huang neighborhood is named after  Isobel Huang, SL (1912-1998), who was a Catholic evangelist in China during a time in which religion was prohibited by law. A student of the Loretto sisters in China and later a member of their community, she assisted victims of the 1931 Yangtze flood. In 1955, she was reported executed by the communists in power. Twenty years later, she was found to be alive, well, and still proclaiming the faith. Isobel Huang is known for her great faith and survival of many disasters. 

The Manganaro neighborhood  is named after Ann Manganaro, SL (1947-1993). A doctor in El Salvador while the country was embroiled in civil war, Ann Manganaro was a Nerinx Hall alumna. Sister Ann taught preschool for ten years before starting medical school at St. Louis University. During medical school, she founded the Karen Catholic Worker house, a shelter for women and children. Sister Ann's first job was a pediatrician in the emergency room, and in 1987, she volunteered with the Jesuit Refugee Service and traveled to El Salvador to provide healthcare for civilians and establish a rural clinic.

The Sanders neighborhood is named after Sister Helen Sanders, SL (1909-2006), who worked closely with Sister Mary Luke Tobin to promote the renewal of religious life endorsed by Vatican II. Following in the footsteps of Tobin, she was a Loretto community president. During her tenure, she assisted in forming collegial government, creating diversity in kinds of membership, giving priority of persons over institutions, and giving personal responsibility within the order. She was known for her energetic and giving spirit. 

The Tobin neighborhood is named after Mary Luke Tobin, SL (1908-2006). Best known for her work with the Vatican II Council, Mary Luke Tobin was one of 15 women auditors and one of only three women who served on commissions to write conciliar documents for the Council. As a Loretto Sister, Tobin worked as a classroom educator and principal for over 20 years in both grade schools and high schools. Shortly thereafter, she became the president of the Loretto Community. She was well-known as someone who worked for justice and peace by traveling, protesting, negotiating, and creating greater understanding.
