Nerinx kicks off National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month officially began on Wednesday, September 15 and runs until October 15. There are many ways we are celebrating and opportunities for you to participate.

To kick-off the month, student Megan Schwarztrauber '24 went on the Morning Show to reflect on her own identity.

"Every day we defy degrading stereotypes, proving to the world we aren’t just 'spicy, exotic, and flamboyant.' In reality, our courage and pure power is what makes the Latina/Hispanic community so strong," Megan said. "Coming together as our Nerinx community, we can celebrate diversity during Hispanic Heritage month."

Megan went on to highlight two Latina women — Ellen Ochoa, who was the first Latina to go to space in 1993, and Alexandria Villaseñor, a 16-year-old Mexican-American climate activist from New York.

"The great determination seen in the lives of Alexandria Villaseñor and Ellen Ochoa is what we celebrate today; two strong women who represent the Latina community in different ways," Megan said.

In addition to celebrating via the Morning Show, our Nerinx librarians have created an online bank of resources to continue our education on Hispanic Heritage. Here you can find a list of titles written by Hispanic authors available to borrow from our library, famous names to know, and other exciting resources.

Students have also pulled their heads together to create a Spotify playlist featuring some of their favorite Hispanic music artists. Give it a listen!

There are other ways the community will celebrate throughout the month, so stay tuned for more!
