Marker Spotlight: Cara Reedy '93

According to Cara Reedy '93, Nerinx helped her find — and use — her voice! That quality certainly comes in handy particularly in the field of journalism and media production, where Cara has enjoyed a long career.

Currently Cara serves as director at the Disability Media Alliance Project (DMAP) at DREDF, where she is working to change the way media represent disabled people, and disability communities. Previously, she worked at CNN producing documentaries as well as writing for Eatocracy and CNN Business. In 2019, she produced her most recent short doc for The Guardian entitled "Dwarfism and Me," which was an exploration into the treatment of Dwarfs in American society.

Of her time at Nerinx, Cara said, "Nerinx taught me how to use my voice with my whole chest. When I went to college, I was astonished at how many women wouldn't speak up in class. They were afraid to say what they knew."

As a Black woman in the news industry, Cara also noted that Nerinx helped her utilize her voice to counteract issues related to equity in the workplace.

"That skill has helped me navigate tough newsrooms, where people like me aren't always welcome to speak. I did anyway, because of Nerinx," she said.

Now she is paying it forward by helping give voice to other people's stories. Here at the Hall, she is also doing her part by serving on the Diversity Alumni Board, where she helps advise the school on issues related to diversity and inclusion.

Thanks, Cara, for the many ways you support our mission and embody our Loretto values!
