AP, SLU 1818 and UMSL ACP

ADvanced Placement (AP)

Through Advanced Placement (AP) courses, students can challenge themselves with college-level coursework while still in high school. AP courses demonstrate academic rigor and can stand out to highly selective colleges and universities. Students must take the AP exam at the end of the course, and depending on their exam score and the college’s policies, they may earn college credit or placement.

  • Eligibility: Students must be recommended by their current teacher in the subject area.
  • Registration: Students register for AP exams in class with their teacher by joining AP Classroom for their course.
  • Cost: Most AP exams are $99 per test; AP Research Honors exams are $129 per test. Costs are subject to change.
  • AP Certificates: Students who complete AP Seminar and AP Research and earn a score of 3 or higher on both exams receive the AP Research Certificate from the College Board. Students who earn the AP Research Certificate and complete four additional AP courses with scores of 3 or higher are eligible for the AP Capstone Diploma.

Slu 1818 and UMSL ACP

Through Saint Louis University's 1818 and UMSL's ACP College Credit programs, students can get a jumpstart on earning college credit while still in high school. The 1818 and ACP programs are designed to engage students as college students while taking classes at Nerinx and taught by Nerinx teachers. Students receive a grade and credit on their Nerinx transcript while also earning college credit and beginning a college transcript with Saint Louis University and/or UMSL.

SLU 1818

COST:  $85/credit hour 

Eligibility: Sophomores must have a 3.5 GPA or higher; juniors and seniors must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Freshmen are not eligible. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Registration: Fall 8/24 - 9/25; Spring 1/19 - 2/19

UMSL ACP 

COST: $73/credit hour

Eligibility: Sophomores must have a 3.5 GPA or higher; juniors and seniors must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Freshmen are not eligible. Exceptions may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Registration: Fall 8/24 - 9/14; Spring 1/4 - 2/8

As college counselors, we often hear questions about whether high school students should take college credit courses. Here’s a closer look at the benefits and considerations to help students and families make informed decisions.

Why Consider College Credit in High School?

  1. Save on Tuition: College courses offered in high school are typically more affordable, providing a significant cost-saving opportunity.

  2. Graduate Sooner: Starting college with credits already earned can reduce the time needed to complete a degree, allowing students to enter the workforce earlier.

  3. Challenge Yourself: These courses offer a taste of college-level academics, preparing students for the rigor of future coursework.

How to Ensure Your Credits Will Transfer

  1. Check College Policies: Many colleges have a transfer equivalency section on their website where you can see how your courses will transfer. Look for sections like “Transfer Credit,” “Advanced Standing,” or “Transfer Equivalency.”

  2. Use Online Tools: Tools like Transferology allow you to see how your courses will transfer to different institutions.

  3. Talk to an Admissions Counselor: Reach out to the admissions offices of the colleges you’re considering for specific guidance on credit transferability.

Is It Worth It?

The decision to take college credits in high school should align with your academic goals, confidence in handling college-level work, and the likelihood of credits transferring. For many students, this can be a smart and strategic choice, but it’s essential to ensure that the benefits will carry through to your college career.

Many of our graduates have found that taking college credits in high school was worth it, as it provided them with the flexibility to pursue double majors or minors during their college years.

SCHOLARSHIP FOR COLLEGE CREDIT: 

Beginning with the spring (January) 2022 semester, high school juniors and seniors may be eligible to receive a scholarship that covers the tuition and fees for their dual credit or dual enrollment courses. To qualify, students must be taking dual credit or dual enrollment courses from a Missouri college or university and meet the eligibility criteria. Awards will be prioritized based on financial need determined by adjusted gross income (AGI) from the most recent tax year.
