NHS at Nerinx Hall

The National Honor Society (NHS) recognizes high school students who exemplify the four pillars of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. At Nerinx Hall, NHS members lead with integrity, support our community through service, and uphold the Loretto values of faith, community, justice, and respect.

Membership Eligibility & Selection

Who is invited to apply?

  • Juniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.6+ at the end of first semester.
  • Seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.6+ at the beginning of senior year.

Note: Beginning with the Class of 2028, the minimum cumulative GPA will be 4.0 (First Honors).

What do eligible students submit?

  • Eligible students submit an online application outlining high school leadership and service involvement. Students craft written responses to questions regarding Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.
Leadership & Service Expectations (for Applicants)

Applicants should demonstrate ongoing involvement in at least three activities that meet regularly, with two Nerinx-related.

Examples

  • Nerinx-related: Student Government, Student Advisory Board, Retreat Leader, leadership in a Nerinx club.
  • Community-related: Church/community service, Girl Scouts, other civic engagement.

Service beyond the requirement

In order to be considered for NHS, Junior applicants must complete 1.5x additional hours of service beyond the Nerinx Hall Service Learning requirement: (37.5 hours) prior to the mid-February application deadline.

First Semester Senior applicants must complete 30 hours of required service. All hours must be completed outside of Nerinx, in direct (face-to-face) service, at one location, and benefit people in need or in traditionally marginalized populations.

All service hours must be completed, logged in MobileServe, and approved by both the site supervisor and the Nerinx Hall Service Learning Coordinator prior to the application deadline.

Evaluation & Induction
  • The Nerinx Hall Faculty Council reviews applications with input from faculty; the faculty moderator facilitates (non-voting).
  • The Associate Principal for Student Affairs reviews academic integrity and disciplinary history.
  • Junior applicants are notified of decisions no later than the last week of March; Senior applicants are notified no later than the last week of September.
  • Upon notice of selection, students will have all privileges of NHS membership and may include this on college applications.
  • New members are inducted in the fall semester at the National Honor Society Induction Ceremony typically held during the last week of October.

Note: A suspension or more than five non-tardy detentions during junior year renders a student ineligible. Behavioral notices, warnings, or probation may also affect eligibility.

Maintaining Membership (After Induction)

Academic Standard

Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.6+. Falling below a 3.6 GPA at the end of Semester 1 triggers probation; failure to achieve/maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.6+ during Senior year results in loss of NHS status.

Note: Beginning with the Class of 2028, NHS Members must maintain a 4.0 GPA (First Honors) throughout their senior year in order to be in good standing..

NHS Service Requirement as an NHS Member

Complete 20 hours of NHS service to Nerinx Hall. These hours are in addition to the Service Learning requirement and not performed in advance of selection. Examples include NHS tutoring (min. 1 hour required), the Re-Sale, Blood Drive, Open House, the Nerinx Auction, Back-to-School Night, Quiz Bowl, and other official NHS service activities. Deadline: May 1. Failure to fulfill hours results in loss of NHS status.

All service hours must be completed, logged in MobileServe, and approved by both the relevant Nerinx Hall faculty member/site supervisor and the Nerinx Hall Service Learning Coordinator prior to the May 1 deadline.

Character & Conduct

Members are required to attend monthly meetings, typically the first Friday of each month, and are expected to act with integrity, faith, community, justice, and respect in mind - on and off campus. Violations of Nerinx policies or conduct that reflects poorly on the school (e.g., academic dishonesty, alcohol violations at school functions, bullying, skipping school, failure to fulfill elected/volunteered duties) may result in dismissal.
